750 required to kill the tumor while in the case of neutron rays only = 2.9 times the 260 mouse lethal dose produces the same tumor effect. This comparison of dosage ratios indicates that neutron rays may be more selective than x-rays in their effects on this tumor. We are indebted to Dr. Francis Carter Wood for specimens of Sarcoma 180, and to Dr. R. S. Stone for his interest and for the x-ray facilities. One of the authors (P. C. The Theory of Steady State Super-Eddington Winds and its Application to Novae

We present a model for steady state winds of systems with super-Eddington luminosities. These radiatively driven winds are expected to be optically thick and clumpy as they arise from an instability driven porous atmosphere. The model is then applied to derive the mass loss observed in bright classical novae. The main results are: (i) A general relation between the mass loss rate and the total ...

Modeling of the Super-eddington Phase for Classical Novae: Five Iue Novae

We present a light curve model for the super-Eddington luminosity phase of five classical novae observed with IUE. Optical and UV light curves are calculated based on the optically thick wind theory with a reduced effective opacity for a porous atmosphere. Fitting a model light curve with the UV 1455 Å light curve, we determine the white dwarf mass and distance to be (1.3 M⊙, 4.4 kpc) for V693 ...

Classical Novae as Super-Eddington Objects

Several of the inconsistencies plaguing the field of novae are resolved once we consider novae to be steady state super-Eddington objects. In particular, we show that the super-Eddington shell burning state is a natural consequence of the equations of stellar structure, and that the predicted mass loss in the super-Eddington state agrees with nova observations. We also find that the transition ...

X-ray emission from classical and recurrent novae observed with ROSAT

We have analysed 350 pointed and serendipitous observations of 108 different classical and recurrent novae in outburst and in quiescence, contained in the ROSAT archive. One aim was to search for super-soft Xray sources and we found only 3 of them among postnovae. Thus, the super-soft X-ray phase of novae is relatively short lived (up to 10 years) and is observed only for up to 20% of novae. Mo...

Super Soft Sources

Super Soft Sources (SSS) are characterized by radiation with effective temperatures of ∼10 to ∼10 K and luminosities of ∼10 to ∼10 erg s. The first luminous SSS in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been discovered around 1980 with the Einstein observatory (Long et al. 1981). Optical identifications for both CAL 83 and CAL 87 established the binary nature of these sources (Cowley et al. 1990...

Resolved Jets and Long-Period Black Hole X-ray Novae

In this brief note we point out that the four spatially resolved relativistic jets among the 14 dynamically confirmed black hole X-ray novae are all in systems with long orbital periods. Many shorter period systems show transient radio outbursts which are attributed to jets, but these jets have not been spatially resolved. Super-Eddington accretion has been suggested as a requirement for jet fo...
